When the Brown Sugar Stitchers announced the challenge for the quilt show, it seemed simple enough. The goal of the challenge was to show that African American quilters are diverse. In keeping with the theme of the quilt show The Many Facets of African American Quilting, the challenge was to make a small quilt that reflected your personal style as a quilter.

For me, that meant a documentary, inspirational quilt.  I enjoy documenting my life with quilts, and I like for my quilts to have an inspiring message.

From this soul searching, Live Love Laugh (Even While Camping) was born. India’s life theme is “Live Love Laugh.”  This is how she signs her emails and how she approaches life. We have spent the entire summer dealing with her various camping trips. Not being an outdoorsy kind of girl, there was a lot of drama associated with spending a week camping in the North Carolina mountains, a week counseling younger kids at choir camp in the North Georgia mountains, and now spending three weeks in the cloud forest of Ecuador. To her credit, she decided to make the most of it. It’s been a great summer, and one she will never forget.

Live Love Laugh (Even While Camping) reflects our summer — happy and full of adventure.

TheBrown Sugar Stitchers Quilt Showopens Saturday, August 1, 2009 and continues through August 7, 2009 at the  South Fulton Arts Center, 4645 Butner Road, College Park, GA.  It is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily. Closed Sunday. Admission is free.
