Quilters are the pioneers of saving the planet. Long before it was fashionable, quilters gathered bits of scraps and turned them into useful quilts or beautiful works of art. Their creed was nothing goes to waste. With the explosion of art quilting, even objects that are not fabric now find their way into quilts.
For quilters, everything is re-cyclable. What once was a torn dress or an over-worked pair of jeans becomes a precious memory in a quilter’s hands. Got a box of mix-match scraps? A quilter will make a charm quilt — a quilt where no fabric repeats itself.
My ode to this frugal tradition is called Feeling Country. Happy Earth Day, Quilters of the World!
